New UK Visa Rules

What You Need to Know

From 08 January, 2025, New Zealand travellers heading to the UK must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This new requirement is designed to streamline entry and applies to anyone without a visa or UK immigration status.

Who Needs an ETA?

If you’re a New Zealander planning to travel to or transit through the UK, you’ll need an ETA unless you hold British or Irish citizenship, permission to live, work, or study in the UK, or a British Overseas Territories passport. Similarly, travellers arriving from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man are exempt.

How to Apply

The application process is straightforward and can be completed online via the UK government website. The cost is £10 (just over NZ$22), and the ETA remains valid for two years, allowing multiple visits of up to six months per trip.

Why the Change?

The introduction of the ETA ensures a smoother, more secure entry process for visitors. While it adds a step to your pre-travel checklist, the simplicity of the system means it’s unlikely to disrupt your plans.

Plan Ahead

To avoid surprises at the airport, ensure you apply for your ETA well in advance of your trip. With this minor formality taken care of, you can focus on planning your UK adventure, from exploring London’s iconic landmarks to the stunning countryside and beyond.
