Discover Colombia by River
A New Journey with AmaWaterways
At Wanderlust Travel Experts, we're always looking to share inspiring new ways for our clients to experience the world. In 2025, river cruising takes an exciting new direction as AmaWaterways launches an entirely new destination: the magnificent Magdalena River in Colombia. This marks the first time a major river cruise line has explored this part of South America, offering a fresh perspective on a vibrant and culturally rich country.
Why Choose a River Cruise in Colombia?
Colombia is a land of contrasts and colour — a place where music, history, and natural beauty meet. Cruising along the Magdalena River provides an opportunity to engage with the country in a more intimate way. Following the river’s northerly flow from the Andes to the Caribbean, guests will discover a region home to more than 80% of Colombia’s population and shaped by Indigenous, European, and African heritage.
These new itineraries reveal the essence of Colombia — not only through its landscapes, but through its people, its stories, and its deep cultural traditions.
A Cultural Journey Like No Other
Colombia is known as the Land of a Thousand Rhythms, and this journey brings that to life. AmaWaterways has developed two 7-night itineraries between Cartagena and Barranquilla and vv., each designed to immerse travellers in the local culture.
Highlights include:
The vibrant streets of Getsemaní in Cartagena
Palenque, the first free city in Colombia and a centre of Afro-Caribbean culture
The colonial charm of Santa Cruz de Mompox
Traditional music performances and the spirit of Barranquilla’s Carnaval, both recognised by UNESCO for their cultural significance
Each day includes a choice of included excursions, returning each evening to a beautifully appointed ship and a warm welcome from the dedicated onboard team.
Small Ships, Thoughtfully Designed
AmaWaterways has introduced two custom-built ships for this journey — AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia. Accommodating just 60 and 64 guests respectively, these ships combine comfort and space with stunning views of the Colombian landscape.
Guests will enjoy
Spacious balcony staterooms
Locally inspired cuisine in the Main Restaurant
A fitness centre and spa treatment room
A sun deck with pool for relaxed river cruising
A Nature-Lover’s Paradise
The Magdalena River basin is home to unique ecosystems and an abundance of birdlife, making it a remarkable destination for those with an interest in nature. Keep an eye out for brilliantly coloured hummingbirds and the Northern screamer (Chauna chavaria), found only in this region.
Flexible, Year-Round Travel
Colombia’s tropical climate makes it an ideal destination at any time of year. With year-round departures and temperatures that rarely fluctuate more than 20 degrees, you can travel when it suits you best.
Extend Your Journey
Travellers also have the option to extend their time in South America with a range of land packages. Before or after your cruise, explore more of the region with stays in Panama City, Medellín, or Cartagena — a perfect way to round out your adventure.
Now Open for Bookings
These unique river cruise itineraries are now available to reserve for 2025. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or simply looking for a new way to discover South America, sailing the Magdalena River offers something rare and memorable.
