Rarotonga Where to Dine & Discover Island Magic
Having visited Rarotonga several times, my recent trips in October 2023 and May 2024 stood out for offering fresh perspectives on the island. Each trip revealed something new, from dining gems to must-do adventures, making Rarotonga a destination I can't recommend enough.
Dining in Rarotonga | My Top Picks
If you're planning a trip to Rarotonga, dining is an essential part of the experience. Here are my top recommendations for where to eat and what to expect:
Antipodes Restaurant
Undoubtedly the best fine dining spot on the island, Antipodes offers stunning views and an exceptional menu. While it’s on the pricier side, it's well worth the investment. Be sure to book ahead—this place fills up fast! I recommend arriving around 5 or 5:30 pm to catch the sunset from the deck. The seafood platter is a standout and perfect for a special night out.
Cococktail
Located just next door to Antipodes, Cococktail is a great place for a pre-dinner drink. With happy hour starting at 4 pm, you can enjoy cocktails and tapas while soaking in the view of the ocean. It’s casual yet chic, making it the ideal spot to unwind before a meal.
Soul Café
This café, situated near town, is a newer addition to the Rarotonga dining scene, and it's quickly become a favourite. While I haven't yet tried dinner here, I can highly recommend the brunch and lunch options. The menu is diverse, with plenty of delicious and fresh choices. It's a laid-back spot with a great atmosphere.
Tamarind House
For a combination of history, beauty, and fantastic food, Tamarind House continues to be a favourite of mine. Located right on the water, it’s perfect for a sunset drink. Last October, I was lucky enough to spot whales from the terrace! Again, go early to secure a good spot and enjoy the stunning views before the sun sets.
Beluga Café
Hands down the best café on the island. The food is always fresh, and the vibe is relaxed. Whether you're grabbing breakfast or just a coffee, this is a must-visit.
Flying Turtle Café
For coffee lovers, Flying Turtle Café is the place to go. They serve excellent coffee and offer some of the best turtle tours on the island. I highly recommend their water scooter tours with Ariki Adventures—seeing turtles up close in the wild is a truly surreal experience, and the guides are top-notch when it comes to safety.
Little Polynesian
This is a beautiful, intimate spot with fantastic food, but keep in mind it's a small restaurant with a more romantic vibe, so it’s perfect for couples. It’s a good idea to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Viana’s Bar
If you're looking for a laid-back spot with great atmosphere, Viana’s is your go-to. Located right on the beach, this bar hosts a free fire show on Thursday nights, which is definitely worth seeing. Be sure to book a table in advance as it gets crowded fast, but it’s the kind of place where you can really feel the island’s laid-back energy.
Rarotonga | More than Just Dining
Aside from the fantastic dining experiences, Rarotonga offers plenty of adventure. Swimming with turtles through Ariki Adventures is a surreal experience you won't forget. Guided by an expert instructor, you glide through crystal-clear waters, spotting majestic turtles along the way. I also recommend a day trip to Aitutaki—it feels like another world with its pristine waters and uninhabited islands.
For hiking enthusiasts, a trek to "The Needle" offers stunning panoramic views of the island, while a visit to Wigmore’s Waterfall is a refreshing way to cool off after a hike.
Rarotonga’s Charm
Rarotonga is simple yet captivating. The warmth of the climate, the friendliness of the locals, and the beautiful surroundings make it a place you’ll want to return to again and again. Whether you’re seeking adventure or tranquillity, this island has something for everyone. Don’t forget to make dining part of your Rarotonga experience—it’s one of the highlights of this enchanting island!
