E-Cigarette Bans in Vietnam & Beyond

Vietnam City Night shot

As of 01 January 2025, Vietnam has joined Singapore, Thailand, and Cambodia in banning the use of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, a move that applies to both locals and tourists. This decisive action reflects Vietnam’s growing commitment to safeguarding public health and addressing the risks associated with alternative tobacco products.

Vietnam’s National Assembly has implemented a comprehensive prohibition on the production, sale, import, storage, transportation, and use of these products. This follows increasing global concern over the popularity of vaping and similar devices, particularly among younger generations. The World Health Organization’s Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, commended Vietnam for this bold step, describing it as a significant measure to protect citizens from the potential harms of vaping.

While e-cigarettes are often marketed as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, health experts have warned about their potential to introduce nicotine addiction to non-smokers, particularly teenagers. Vietnam’s latest policy reinforces its longstanding efforts to implement stringent anti-smoking measures and prioritise the health of its citizens.

For travellers from New Zealand, it’s important to be aware of these regulations before visiting Vietnam or its neighboring countries where similar bans are in place. Violating these laws could result in severe penalties, including fines and confiscation of your devices. If you’re planning a trip to these destinations, leave your vaping and heated tobacco products at home to ensure a hassle-free travel experience.

Stay informed and travel responsibly.
