Bookmark the Queen Charlotte Track

As a seasoned travel professional, I have explored many breathtaking destinations, but none have captivated my heart quite like the Queen Charlotte Track in New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds. From 28 March to 02 April 2024, my husband, teenage daughters, friends, and I embarked on this adventure, beginning and ending in Blenheim, experiencing the raw beauty and historical richness of this spectacular region.

Thursday: A Grand Beginning

Our journey began in Blenheim, a charming gateway to the Marlborough Sounds. The excitement was palpable as we took a short shuttle ride to Picton, where a ferry awaited to transport us to the trailhead. Stepping off the boat, we were immediately enveloped by the pristine beauty of the Sounds—turquoise waters framed by lush, green hills.

The first day’s hike led us to Furneaux Lodge, a haven of comfort and history nestled in Endeavour Inlet. The lodge’s rustic charm and its delightful cuisine were the perfect introduction to the Queen Charlotte Track. Dining at Furneaux Lodge, with its serene surroundings, set a high bar for the days to come.

Friday: History and Nature Intertwined

On the second day, we ventured further along the track, encountering the historic site where Captain James Cook once stood in the 17th century. This spot, at the beginning of the trail, offered a poignant reminder of New Zealand’s storied past, seamlessly blending history with the natural splendour surrounding us.

The trail continued to Punga Cove, known for its picturesque setting and culinary delights. Although we chose not to stay overnight here, the dining experience was a memorable one, providing much-needed sustenance for the journey ahead.

Saturday: The Ultimate Challenge

Day three proved to be the most demanding yet rewarding part of the trek. The 24.5-kilometer stretch from Camp Bay to Torea Saddle, encompassing five formidable peaks, tested our endurance. Each ascent brought its own breathtaking reward—panoramic views of the Marlborough Sounds that seemed to stretch endlessly.

Despite the physical challenge, the beauty of the landscape, with its abundant native birdlife including weka and kereru, provided constant motivation. Arriving at The Portage that evening, the sense of accomplishment was immense. A glass of local wine, enjoyed while overlooking the tranquil waters, was the perfect way to celebrate the day's achievements.

Sunday: The Final Stretch

The final leg of the journey brought us to The Portage, a fitting conclusion to an extraordinary adventure. Each resort along the track had offered a unique blend of comfort and scenic beauty, and The Portage was no exception. The sense of community among fellow travelers, each sharing tales of the day’s hike, was a highlight of the experience.

Practical Insights for Future Adventurers

For those inspired to embark on the Queen Charlotte Track, a few practical tips can enhance the experience. If comfort is a priority, I recommend staying at Furneaux Lodge and arranging a daily boat transfer. The Cougar Line pass is a smart choice, as it transports your overnight bags, allowing you to hike unencumbered.

Dining options are limited along the track, so pre-booking lunch packs at the resorts is essential. This ensures you have a hearty meal ready each morning, as there are no other food options available.

Best Time to Visit and Packing Essentials

The Queen Charlotte Track is open from November to May, with spring and autumn offering ideal conditions for hiking. Be prepared for all weather conditions—pack swimwear, towels, sunblock, hats, trainers, a wet weather jacket, and a beanie. Essentials like water bottles, a first aid kit, and a lunch cooler bag are crucial for the journey.

A Journey for All

The Queen Charlotte Track is perfect for families, couples, solo travellers, and groups of like-minded, fit individuals. Each day presents new challenges and rewards, catering to those seeking both adventure and tranquillity.

Reflecting on the Experience

Returning to Blenheim, the memories of the Queen Charlotte Track remained vivid. The stunning landscapes, historical sites, and welcoming lodges created an experience unlike any other. Whether you’re savouring a meal at Furneaux Lodge, conquering the peaks of day three, or simply soaking in the serene views, the Queen Charlotte Track promises an adventure that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Having experienced the Queen Charlotte Track firsthand with my family and friends, I can say with certainty that it is a journey of unparalleled beauty and challenge, where each step is a testament to the wonder of New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds.
