Discovering Sun Peaks

The Ultimate Ski Holiday in British Columbia

After countless winters navigating the bustling slopes of New Zealand’s Cardrona Resort, it was time for a change. We set our sights on Canada, dreaming of a white Christmas and an unforgettable New Year. Our destination: Sun Peaks, British Columbia, a hidden gem just five hours by car from Vancouver, or a quick flight to Kamloops followed by a scenic 45-minute drive.

Arriving at Sun Peaks in the late afternoon, we checked into the cozy Sundance Lodge. This lodge, with its spacious apartment-style rooms and fully-equipped kitchens, might not scream luxury, but its prime location—just 25 meters from the ski lift—was unbeatable. Being able to walk back to our room in ski boots for a quick lunch break or to rest was incredibly convenient, especially for families with teens who wanted to explore the mountain independently. The Sundance Lodge also connects directly to the village, offering easy access to a coffee bar, an excellent bistro, and various shops, including a supermarket and liquor store. Everything was reasonably priced, making it a haven for us Kiwis.

For those seeking more upscale digs, the Grand Residences next door offer luxurious ski-in/ski-out accommodations. Though there are numerous condos and lodges around town, not all offer the same seamless access to the slopes. However, the free shuttle bus service makes it easy to get around if you’re staying a bit further afield.

Our group consisted of skiers of all levels, from advanced to intermediate, both young and old. With no lift queues and plenty of space, we could ski together or venture off on our own. The long, picturesque runs, especially the Willows, offered breathtaking views. We also took advantage of the complimentary Ski Hosts, who provide an excellent way to explore the mountain. Our host was phenomenal, and I highly recommend this service early in your trip to ensure you experience every corner of the mountain. All that’s expected in return is a tip, and if you’re in a group, you often have the host all to yourself.

Sun Peaks isn’t just about skiing; it’s a winter wonderland offering a myriad of activities. Non-skiers or part-time skiers can indulge in dog sledding, snowmobiling tours (which book up quickly), snowshoeing, ice skating, tubing, and tobogganing.

Imagine starting your day at a local coffee shop, where the village’s friendly atmosphere makes everyone feel like a neighbor. With a warm drink in hand, you’re ready to tackle the slopes—from the majestic Top of the World to the exhilarating off-piste zones of Gil’s, or the perfectly groomed runs for deep carving. The thrill of the mountain is palpable.

Pause for a moment and imagine standing amidst snow ghosts, surrounded by a stunning mountain landscape on a mystical snowy day. In our fast-paced lives, we often forget to slow down and enjoy some “me time.” Sun Peaks is that gentle reminder to nourish your soul. Connecting with nature here isn't just about the breathtaking views; it's a journey back to your inner self, perhaps even reviving your inner child. The mountain air brings peace, wonder, and a deep appreciation for the present moment.

Whether you're an adrenaline enthusiast on skis or a snowboard, a graceful ice skater, a snowshoeing explorer, or someone looking to relax amidst nature's embrace, Sun Peaks is your all-inclusive destination, adorned in Mother Nature's finest. Whether you're a beginner finding your footing or an advanced adventurer seeking the next challenge, Sun Peaks has something for everyone.

Nature is calling, and it’s time to answer. Step away from the hustle, treat yourself to a rejuvenating pause, and let Sun Peaks’ special blend of magic create lifelong memories. We only booked a week and could have stayed much longer. Your adventure in nature awaits—are you ready to embrace it?
