Exploring Japan
One of our team recently returned from an inspiring trip through Japan, exploring the vibrant cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima. Their insights reveal a fascinating mix of tradition and modernity, offering a practical guide for anyone planning a journey to Japan.
Captivating Attractions and Unforgettable Experiences
For those seeking adventure, Tokyo Disneyland and Osaka’s Universal Studios are thrilling additions to any itinerary. However, it’s the cultural and historical landmarks that truly leave a mark. The Hiroshima Peace Park and Museum, for instance, offer a poignant journey through history, with exhibits that commemorate the lives affected by the atomic bombing. Sadako’s paper cranes, a symbol of peace and resilience, are a particularly moving experience, serving as a reminder of the city’s remarkable resilience.
The immersive art installations at TeamLab Borderless and Planet in Tokyo were another unforgettable highlight. These digital art museums create captivating, interactive spaces that blur the boundaries between physical and virtual worlds. Meanwhile, a visit to Miyajima Island provided a tranquil, scenic escape. Encountering the friendly deer that roam freely on the island was a unique experience that felt almost magical in this natural setting.
Savory Delights: Japan’s Culinary Treasures
Food is at the heart of Japanese culture, and there is no shortage of exceptional dining experiences to be had. In Tokyo, sushi at Shibuya’s popular Kara Sushi spot delivered fresh flavours in a bustling, lively atmosphere. In Osaka, the savory pancake known as okonomiyaki was a standout at Issei Yossoku, where the dish is prepared with a variety of toppings to create a deliciously personalized meal. Kyoto’s Ine Tofu Restaurant was also a delightful discovery, offering a plant-based menu that’s perfect for vegetarians.
For budget-conscious travellers, convenience stores such as 7-Eleven, Lawson, and Family Mart serve surprisingly good and affordable meals for under $7. These stores even discount their food items after 6 PM, providing both locals and tourists a taste of Japanese cuisine at a fraction of the price.
Cultural Etiquette and Navigating Japan’s Efficient Transportation
Japan’s deeply rooted cultural etiquette quickly became apparent. Basic phrases like “Arigatou gozaimasu” (Thank you) and “Sumimasen” (Excuse me) go a long way in showing respect. Additionally, it’s customary to remain quiet on public transportation, as many Japanese view their commute as a private time to unwind.
Traveling around Japan is made easier with the Japan Rail Pass, which allows unlimited travel on JR-operated trains, making cross-country trips convenient and affordable. While navigating Tokyo’s train network can be a bit daunting at first, the system becomes second nature within a few days. Useful apps like Google Maps and Navi Time are invaluable for quickly planning routes.
Hidden Gems and Unique Tips
Japan is filled with hidden gems, from tucked-away alleyway eateries to lesser-known shops. A tip for finding these hidden treasures: look beyond the main streets to discover an array of dining spots where each meal is an adventure. For travellers looking to recharge, try an Ekiben—special lunch boxes sold at train stations—during a ride on the Shinkansen bullet train. These beautifully presented boxes are both delicious and a cultural experience in themselves.
Our team member also suggests packing foot patches for weary feet after a long day of walking. Comfortable shoes are a must, as exploring Japan often means covering a lot of ground. Be prepared to carry luggage at times, as not all train stations have elevators.
We recommend getting a Pasmo card which can be purchased at Narita or Haneda Airport – it is like an AT hop card here in Auckland, you can use the card for public transport and most convenient stores accept this card which is handy if you don’t have cash.
When to Visit
Spring (April-May) is an ideal time to visit Japan, especially to catch the cherry blossoms in bloom. The temperate climate and stunning scenery make it perfect for outdoor exploration and enjoying Japan’s iconic sakura season.
Japan’s mix of rich history, modern attractions, and exquisite cuisine offers something for every type of traveller. From vibrant cities to serene temples, there is a wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered.
