Everything Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a destination well worth the journey from New Zealand. This island nation in the Indian Ocean offers an extraordinary mix of cultural depth, natural beauty, and rich biodiversity. Wander through ancient cities, explore lush tea plantations, relax on golden beaches, or spot wildlife in national parks—all in one trip. With welcoming locals, flavourful cuisine, and a laid-back pace, Sri Lanka offers a travel experience that feels both adventurous and enriching. It’s a place that rewards curiosity and leaves lasting impressions long after you return home.

What You Need to Know

Discover Colombo

Far from being just a gateway, Colombo is a city coming into its own. Rooftop bars, jazz clubs, boutique shops, and world-class restaurants create a lively blend of old and new. Explore bustling markets in Pettah, wander colonial streets, watch the sunset at Galle Face Green, or cheer at a local cricket match. Colombo offers a unique introduction to modern Sri Lankan life—and hopping in a tuk tuk to explore its corners is part of the fun.

Wildlife & Eco Stays

Sri Lanka’s wildlife is a true highlight—from majestic elephants to elusive leopards, this is a land where nature still thrives. Many lodges near national parks operate with sustainability at heart, providing an authentic and environmentally conscious experience. These stays often come without televisions but offer something far richer: nature walks, yoga, cooking classes, and cultural encounters. Hot water may take a moment to arrive, but the slower pace and immersive setting are all part of the charm.

Getting Away from the Crowds

For travellers who crave the road less travelled, Sri Lanka’s Northern Province is a treasure. Formerly off-limits, this region is slowly opening up and offers a more raw, untouched view of the island. Here, you’ll find fewer tourists, minimal development, and the chance to connect deeply with local communities. It’s ideal for those wanting to discover a different side of Sri Lanka—one shaped by resilience and tradition, far from the polished tourist trail.

Visa Requirements for New Zealand Travellers

New Zealand travellers need a visa to enter Sri Lanka. The easiest and most efficient option is to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eVisa) online via www.eta.gov.lk. We recommend completing this process at least a week before departure. While there is a visa-on-arrival option, delays are likely, and many airlines now ask for visa confirmation before boarding. The tourist visa is valid for 30 days, and your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. You’ll also need a return ticket and sufficient funds for your stay. Your Wanderlust Travel Expert will be able to assist you with all your visa requirements when booking your holiday through them.

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on where you’re going. The west and south coasts, along with the hill country, are at their best from December to March, while the east coast is ideal from May to September. Thanks to its two distinct monsoon seasons, there's always sunshine somewhere on the island. Whether you're chasing surf, sun, or cooler mountain air, there’s never a wrong time to experience the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality.

Currency, Credit Cards & ATMs The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR), with notes available in denominations from 10 to 2000. It's wise to carry smaller notes for everyday transactions such as meals, tips, or tuk tuk rides. While major hotels and tourist shops quote prices in US dollars or Euros, all payments are collected in rupees at the local exchange rate. Currency can be exchanged at banks, hotels, or authorised money changers—avoid unauthorised exchanges, as they are illegal. Credit cards are widely accepted in urban centres and ATMs are generally easy to find. For peace of mind, always carry some cash, especially when travelling to rural areas.

Dress & Respect Sri Lanka is a deeply spiritual country, and respecting local customs goes a long way. When visiting temples or religious sites, cover shoulders and knees—carry a scarf or shawl for convenience. Shoes must be removed before entering these sacred spaces. Modest clothing is always appreciated, especially in rural areas. Many higher-end hotels also request guests avoid shorts during dinner, so it’s wise to pack something suitable for evening wear.

Eating Local Food is a true highlight of any Sri Lankan journey. From fragrant rice and curry to street-side kottu roti, each dish is full of flavour. Timing matters—hoppers are a breakfast or late-afternoon treat, while rice and curry dominate lunchtime menus. Street food is popular and delicious, but seek out busy, local-favoured spots for the best (and safest) bites. Eating with your hands is common and adds to the experience—just be sure to wash up first!
